DeVry U.

Post by Alinor » Tue Mar 13, 2012 10:55 pm

Hellooo!
Im considering DeVry's Web Game Design Program. Anyone have any insider info about it? I would be taking it online. I spent a good chunk of day on the phone with them and although I havent made any commitments, it sounds like it could be promising. Any ideas??????

It's good, but as a student of it, there are still other's I'd recommend. Devry is good when it comes to teaching C++ and certain hardware/physics aspects to programming. However, when you get the classes that use "Game maker" it's like, "why the the the the the am I learning this?" If you're looking for art and design, I'd recommend art institute of pittsburgh. I'd also recommend looking into full sail.

I havent actually talked to Full Sail, yet but they have left a few "messages". I use quotes there because it seemed to be almost automated. Also, they didnt leave any direct numbers to a rep. That makes me kinda iffy about them as I dont wanna feel like a number to them.
As for AI:P If they are calling me (I sent a request there as well) they have yet to leave me an actual msg. I know it kinda sounds weird but I ignore the house phone unless I know whos calling. Telemarketers have been a pain in the arse since we moved in here.
I also sent a request to The Academy of Art in San Francisco, if anyone has any info about them =D.

Btw, thanks for the feedback. I was wondering about how their art/design program might be. To be more specific they rep says I should be in 'Multimedia Design and Development' with a focus on 'Web Game Programming'.

So, art/design as in a concept artist or game artist? Like 3D/2D in-game art... sprite art, 3d models, etc.? Or are we just referring to the concept art of a game, perhaps interface art instead of gameplay art...Be more specific and maybe I can get some more info for ya in DeVry.

I cna't say much more than what K7 has already said about Devry or make any other suggestions but when I was getting into Devry myself my advisor put me in multimedia design against my wishes at first. It seems that they are wanting more students for that. They did quickly fix the problem when I suggested me finding another school though and I've been fairly haooy ever since I got into the Game and Simulation programming like I wnated.

I have a friend that went to AI of Pittsburg for interior design and he said they were good with things like MAYA or 3d MAX for interior design and they are an art school so I'd imagine they would be better this knid of thing. On a side note their was a class I had to take that I had to use 3d MAX at devry and it wasn't too bad but I slacked off and didn't learn much and still got an A so I would check other places before you decide on Devry.

Sorry to take so long to get back to this topic but I've been procrastinating! In any case, Game Artist is probably more up my alley. I don't know that I have the 'Imagination' to be a concept artist on a full time basis. I think I would working with character models and to some extent environments would be fun but I would definately have to be the guy who got the concepts from somebody a bit more creative. I have a hard time working with a blank page as opposed to having an idea to jump off with.

Also, I was looking into how to make Sprites (although I only had time for 1 site at the time) it sounds rather fun to me. Seems simple enough but one of those things that would take a while to master!

If you get into sprites and other 2D art like that, realize that most of your work will be related to those indie gamers rather than major companies such as Blizzard, Epic, etc. Just because they'll be expecting 3D in-game stuff. :)

I kind of wondered about that. Im gonna try to follow through the tutorial I found sometime this week using some of the free software I've found listed on Wikipedia (I really don't like that as a source lol). See where it takes me =D.
