Science Thread (Read rules on first post)

Post by K73SK » Fri Nov 14, 2014 9:42 am

This thread is to discuss just about anything science-related. But before posting, please read the following rules:

* PLEASE follow the site rules here.
* Be mature about posting. No arguments, no name-calling, no trash talking, and no anti-religious posts. To help, answer the following questions to yourself before posting: "Would this post be something learned/discussed in a class setting?", "Is this going to cause ANYONE to become offended?", "Is this something a science community would discuss?"

This is kind of a test-thread to see whether a forum would be worth creating or not. If we can get enough activity here (with the right amount of members discussing and not just a few people), then we will probably make a forum for general science threads.

So I'll start things off... I thought everyone should check out these amazing photos and what not, found here: Siberia's Mysterious Holes. What do you think? Pretty cool, huh?
Researchers have finally made it to the bottom of one of the three mysterious holes that were spotted up in Siberia in July - and they’ve brought back data that will hopefully help identify where they came from.

The holes, which appeared seemingly out of nowhere on Russia’s Yamal Peninsula, were first spotted in July after an aircraft pilot photographed them from above (one of the many viral pictures he released is below).

Naturally, the internet went crazy with conspiracy theories about underground explosions, meteorites and, of course, aliens.

Now scientists from the Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration has worked their way down into the bottom of the largest hole, as Peter Farquhar reports for Business Insider Australia.

The hole stretched about 16 metres down to its floor - but at the bottom there's a frozen lake that's at least another 10.5 metres deep.

It’s taken this long for a team to get down there as they had to wait for that lake to freeze over - in the summer it’s a mud bath with water pouring into it from the ground above. But in the -11 degrees Celsius weather, they were able to get right to the bottom safely and investigate what had caused the phenomenon.

The researchers are looking into the theory that the holes were caused by underground gas explosions.

One unusual observation as that the largest hole is located on the intersection of two tectonic faults - although the region is generally stable in a seismological sense, the scientists found that the temperature beneath the whole was “higher than normal,” as Farquhar explains for Business Insider Australia.

But it’ll be a while before we know for sure what caused the chasms to suddenly appear in the landscape.

“We took all the probes we planned, and made measurements,” Vladimir Pushkarev, director of the Russian Centre for Arctic Exploration, told The Siberian Times.

“Now scientists need time to process all the data and only then can they draw conclusions.”

Another theory is that the holes aren’t new at all - but no one had ever noticed them until now.

The researcher will also be studying images from satellites all the way back to the 1980s to find out if any similar objects have ever been recorded in the remote region.

That took an unexpected twist.

To be honest, I'm not that fascinated by the holes. I read about'em awhile back, and well, it didn't capture my attention.

Can we talk about the Magnetars that despite being BILLIONS of light years away, can still cause devastating results to our planet (like in 2004, I think, how one damaged a number of Satellites and messed with our very own planet).

They're crazy.

And awesome.

they're nature's way of saying get wrecked
it really do be like that tho

Ill admit that neutron stars were a weak subject for me when looking over astronomy because... well, they didn't spark an interest for me for some reason lol. But basically, a magnetar is just a neutron star with a larger magnetic field. Not sure of what else (I'll research more later for you), but I believe that's the key difference between them so they're just categorized as a neutron star most of the time. And for those who don't know, a neutron star is just the "remains" of old type II supernovae. They rotate very fast and eventually just slow down (and I think turn into white dwarves, but not positive on that so don't take my word for it).

Another type of neutron star is a pulsar, which is closer in relation to a magnetar in that it emits large amounts of radiation which are actually what's harmful to us because it contains gamma rays and x-rays (the former being much worse).

Please keep the posts sensible to this topic. It's not just a chat thread, it's a science thread that'll be the test run on whether it's even worth making a forum or not. So if you like Bigfoot or the study of Bigfoot (if you're being serious), then post articles and pictures you want discussed over...

In other news, thought I'd present my favorite spiders in the following pictures! You know these guys are cute! What kind of animals/insects/etc. are your favorite?

Goat? what? Jumping spiders are goats? I disagree. Goats belong to the genus of Capra which is composed of 9 species including the wild goat, the markhor, and several species known as ibex. Jumping Spiders belong to the genus Salticidae. 2 different Genus.
Plus
Capra=Mammals
Salticidae=Arachnids

YOU WRONG AGAIN RED
