They are all pretty amazing, IMHO. Nocturne gets the most (cult) praise, but honestly, it's my least favorite (but it's still awesome). Persona 3 & 4 and Digital Devil Saga 1 are 3 of my all time favorite games.

All the diff. series's are different.

Persona 3 and 4 have a very addictive 'dating-sim' type 'social link' system. You spend time with friends, potential romantic partners, and various people you meet throughout the game and are given different choices to respond to their comments. Choices that can actually make differences and aren't completely pointless like alot of other RPG's. The stories in both games are different from one another but with many similarities. In both games you are a high-school student and strange things begin to happen. You and your friends eventually become 'Persona Users' which is kinda similar to Mystics in Legaia 2. In both games you (the main character) is 'special' and can use multiple Personas unlike all the other Persona users, who can only use 1. The battles have a pokemon-style weakness system that can grant you extra turns in battle (by hitting opponents weaknesses) or lose you turns (by hitting an opponents strenghths). It works against you as well, so it's nicely strategic. The game music is mostly j-pop with a sprinkling of hip-hop-ish stuff. It's better and more catchy than that description makes it sound, lol. If I don't stop now, i'm just going to keep gushing about these games....i love them so much :D

Digital Devil Saga is equally addictive and epic. You start out as a 'clan' with your friends in a desolate place with a bunch of other rival clans. All the clans are fighting each-other for domination in there little wasteland of a world, where there is a disembodied 'higher-power' type being that promises the last surviving clan will ascend to Nirvana. But then something happens and it turns everyone into Demons. The 'higher-power' deems that the only way to win the war is to, LITERALLY, devour your opponents....as in eating them. Battle system is almost exactly like Persona except without Persona's....instead, your demon forms have the magic abilities and whatnot. Its really dark and the music is amazing.

The real big selling point (for me) about those 2 series of games is the characters and their development throughout the games. You become really emotionally attached to the characters. The game makes you actually care about them and what is happening to them.

Nocturne is very similar to Digital Devil Saga (but it came first, so i guess its vice-versa....and you don't eat your opponents) except that you can 'recruit' your enemies to fight for you (similar to acquiring new Personas for the MC in Persona 3 and 4). You are the only party member aside from the demons you recruit. It's kinda the darkest of the games, but that's debatable. One fun thing about it is that Dante from Devil May Cry is one of the demons you can recruit :) Nocturne is the only one of these that I haven't beaten yet....it gets insanely difficult at some points...

Devil Survivor is on the DS and 3DS and it's alot like Nocturne but more friendly to younger audiences (both story and difficulty wise). It's battle system is like a cross between Nocturne and Advanced Wars (or other Strategy RPG's). I just recently got this game so I can't delve much further than that yet.

The Devil Summoner games I haven't played yet but i've heard good things.

They are all pretty rare games, but you can usually find Persona 3 (FES edition is the best) for $17.99-$19.99. The other games run about $19.99-$49.99.
