honestly, you wouldn't need more than 10-15 of any one material throughout the game (for weapons and armor upgrades). you can safely sell anything over that. late in the game (after Drakonia) you want to keep as much as possible for tool (item) upgrades though. not necessary but makes things easier.

I just upgraded whatever I was allowed to and didn't really pay attention to what I was making as long as I saw the blue arrow pointing upward next to the stat number
Tireless Ribbon is easily the most awesome accessory though.
