You don't even have to win the tournament to get the Speed Chain. All you have to do is get more than... I think, something like 350 points (maybe 375, less than 400) in practice with the Disco King to get the Speed Chain.
It's one of the most critical items to get in a speed run, in my estimation. It probably saved many, many resets and probably a couple hours on the run time.
