hmm
hey i just had a question, since ima be a future programmer and what not, say i make an rpg, think it'd completely kill a game if you killed all the protagonists in the ending?, or at least some of them, i mean there's gotta be a game out there where the good guys die right?

Re: hmm
There are a few, but most of them usually come back. Unless the main goober is extremely likable, I doubt it'd be a problem. But killing the whole party off completely is just unforgivable.
In legaia 2 for example, Lang does die, but he's brought back, so it's like nothing... But if he were to die with no chance of return (which legaia 2 pretty much ended with) then the game will most likely take a horrible turn to the badgamelands.

it really do be like that tho

Well... several factors would have to be considered...
1) Is it the only/canon ending? Is that the only result the player can get by progressing through the game? If it was one of a few, it'd be completely valid and fine, really. Problems with it would really only arise if that were the only ending, I think.
2) How likeable will the characters be? If the player ends up not caring for them, it wouldn't be too big a deal, but it would likely damage their overall view of the game itself. If the player ends up loving all or a few, they probably wouldn't he too happy with it, at least if it was the only ending available.
3) How sensible is it? Throughout the journey, especially towards the end, is it constantly being made clear that the party is in over their heads? Is the villain a legitimate threat? Does it make sense how and why the party didn't make it? Was it fun to play and then watch it happen?
4) Is that what you wanna do? If you really wanna make that the ending, then why not? It's your game, isn't it?
Hope that helps

Re: hmm
As long as the villain/s die too it should be fine. But if the hero's die because the villain/s win...then that defeats the whole purpose of playing the game. People will rage and riot.

Re: hmm
heh you all have a point i was just curious as to how that would maybe turn out, that's not my intention i was just considering the different possibilities of endings when that crossed my mind.
Re: hmm
Maybe make it depend on whether the player actually wins or loses the battle lol. They win, then they live and something awesome happens. If they lose, then something awesome still happens.
