My introduction

Post by MarqFJA87 » Tue Jul 09, 2013 10:28 pm

Hi. Wish I had come across this site ages ago. Legend of Legaia was the very first RPG I've ever played, as well as among the very first five or so console video games (the original Playstation, incidentally) that I've played, and it remains my favorite in the woefully-tiny Legaia franchise. Did you that I actually cried bitterly after the game plot's unexpected slap-in-the-face that it dealt me after I headed back from Jette's Absolute Fortress? TT_TT

About myself:
  • This may come as a shocking surprise to many, but I come from and live in Saudi Arabia. And yes, I'm a practicing Muslim, which frequently results in friction between my religious beliefs and my "vices" (e.g. sexual fanservice). I've taken to adopting a form of "double consciousness" to be able to cope in such cases, though I have no illusions or self-delusions about the actual morality of what I do. Why yes, I'm a rather complicated and conflicted person... but then, how many people in this world aren't?
  • I'm a university student -- studying Computer Engineering, specifically.
  • I'm very heavily swayed in the direction of anime/manga and other Japanese media (too many titles to count, but unless it's a very obscure one, chances are I've at least heard of the name somewhere), though I do have some interests in Western works (whether or not I've actually read/watched them). That said, see at the bottom for other areas of interest.
  • I am an editor/poster at TV Tropes & Idioms. And for those of you who are up to date on the going ons there... No, I generally do not like the direction that it has taken over the past few years, and that's all I'm going to say about the matter.
Anime/manga (combined 'cause so many of them are manga-with-anime-adaptation or anime-with-manga-adaptation): Captain Tsubasa (probably my first anime ever; watched it as an elementary-school kid), UFO Grendizer (another of those watched-since-I-was-a-kid), Heidi, Girl of the Alps (yup, third time), Detective Conan, Ranma 1/2, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bleach, One Piece, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Lyrical Nanoha, Black Rock Shooter, Strike Witches, Girls und Panzer (HOW CAN GIRLS IN TANKS BE SO EPICALLY AWESOME?!)... The list goes on and on.

VNs: Anything in the Nasuverse, Katawa Shoujo.

Western animation/comics/movies/live-action series: DC and Marvel Universes, Disney works, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Terminator, Robocop, the Alien/Predator franchise, Kim Possible, Totally Spies, and the new My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series (do not mention the original MLP series, please; I have no idea what possessed me as a kid to find them worthwhile).

Games: RPGs from famous staples like Final Fantasy and Pokemon to obscure titles like the Legaia series, hack-and-slash like Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Rising, stealth-action like the Metal Gear Solid series and Batman: Arkham Series, real-time strategy games all over the place (favorite is pre-EA Command & Conquer series; LONG LIVE WESTWOOD STUDIOS!), fighting games like The King of Fighters and the Dead or Alive series, even tabletops like Warhammer 40,000 (though sadly I can't get my hands on the actual games or the models; I have to make do with scavenging sourcebook PDFs to read up on the fluff).

As you can see, my interests are quite diverse... and it's just the tip of the iceberg, no exaggeration. Honest, the number of works in each category that I follow -- excluding webcomics -- number in the 100s at the very least, if I just go by the number of folders on my hard drive.

No ones I have Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. is a big deal to these forums because it's against the rules to make posts about them anyway - that way we have no fights, debates, etc. about religions. So there's no problems here friend!

Good to see another computer person here. You said you're studying engineering... do you mean actually building the computer hardware? If so, that's intense! Welcome to the site and I hope you stick around ^^

I fluently speak and write Arabic and English. I have considerable self-taught knowledge of Japanese vocabulary and grammar as well, though I can't quite speak full sentences that well, have predictable trouble memorizing the sheer number of kanji, and still have to frequently consult online dictionaries (Tangorin is quite reliable most of the time) and Wikipedia.

That's good to hear, though I wasn't worried about that. I said what I said because I expected that many people might have a double-take at the idea of a fan of anime/manga/comics who both appreciates the sexual fanservice and is actually a practicing Muslim who subscribes to a generally more conservative interpretation of Islam than, say, the average Lebanese/Egyptian. Predictably, I suffer from a lot of self-loathing over this duality; I detest hypocrites, yet I am one myself.

Yeah, though it's mostly designing computers and simple circuits so far.

Being impressive isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Not really. Sorry. FWIW, I don't have any particular interest in any sport. Doesn't stop me from being a fan of Captain Tsubasa and Slam Dunk, though. 8-)

Thank you very much.

You know, I've been wondering... How on Earth did you guys get a hold of all those Japanese-version names for characters, items, etc. that you're using on the wiki?

Huh, I've been interested in learning Arabic? Do you have any advice for a beginner who knows absolutely nothing?
