Host requiring an update to PHP by November...

Ok, so we just got a taste demo of what happens to these forums when PHP 5.4 is activated. For those of you who did not get it, there are error messages all over the forums and if you sign out, you'll be unable to log back in.

Fortunately, the host is allowing me to keep PHP 5.2 (considered to be not-so-secure) until November of this year. This gives us some time to update the forums. But what's that mean?

Well, it means that we're going to have to redo the forums. I attempted to update the forums to a newer version which supported PHP 5.4 but that failed rather miserably. So what I'm going to do is work on the new forums on the side, but keep these ones up. As soon as the new forums are ready to go, I'll swap them over and everyone will see the change right away. It'll take some time, considering all the mods and stuff we have on here... But if we are to keep a community, it's the only route.

Sorry for any inconveniences we had previously. Everything SHOULD be working now though. Let me know if there's something not working for you.

I have a free week to try and spend some time to update the forums before they crash into eternity later this year. So, just a notice ahead (and I'll let you guys know again when the time comes closer), the forums will be closed from August 17 - August 24. If I finish the work earlier, it'll open up before the 24th. But there's a lot of work that needs to be done to get the mods all working, and I don't have the time to do something like that right now.

Will it be the case that all of our posts, postcounts, and other forum stuff will remain intact after the forums are moved over to the new system and fixed back up?

I think that that's the most proximal concern for us, although we of course know that security and other such topics are obviously important.

Yes, I won't be trashing the database. The easy part will be saving that data and moving it to the new phpbb forums. It'll be a LOT more difficult when I transfer that information to the new site in the future, but I'll still be sure to find away. No worries.
