I had a dream last night about Starcraft and wrote a short story on it.
TVRP (Terran Virtual Reality Program)
The TVRP was a new program that just came out. It involved being plugged into a machine, and going into a virtual reality where people would fight other creatures such as Zerg or Protoss. Was it a program to help with combat training? Was it something more?
I had signed up for the TVRP. Going into a real-like world where you couldn’t actually die sounded like a fun time. The question of whether or not our virtual selves were somehow real, and we were really fighting and killing an enemy had come to mind. I was too enthralled by the program though to ask any questions. I just wanted to dive in to this project quickly.
I woke up on the morning of the first test. The alarm clock was chirping in my ear like an annoying bird that needed to be suppressed by gunfire. I lied there a while thinking about the day ahead. I didn’t think long due to my anxiety, and got up to get ready. I was ready in no time and it was close to time to go. I decided I would head that way even if it meant waiting there a bit before it started.
I arrived at room 131 in Compound D. There were a handful of others with the same uniform on as myself. Surely they were in the TVRP also. There were also people there that weren’t wearing the same uniform. They were probably the staff and other prominent members.
One of the generals started talking. “Well it looks like everyone’s here even though it’s not even time yet so we will begin. I would like to thank you all for testing out this new program that we just developed. I must warn all of you that this is in its alpha phase, and there might be some bugs or even side-effects to this process. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. Otherwise we will begin.”
It seemed everyone there was also anxious because no one had any questions. There were about ten of us it seemed. There were a handful of people in the background probably working on the machine making sure it was stable and everything. About five people were watching us, they were probably the observers. They were going to keep an eye on us and make sure everything went smoothly. We all got into our positions and did what we were told to prepare for the plunge into this virtual reality. With our places attained, the general gave the go. The people in the background became very busy, flipping switches and doing other tasks. It wasn’t long and the world was plucked away as if it was a baseball and someone had just hit it with a bat.
We formed a body that looked just like ourselves on some unknown planet. Seeing as we weren’t humans, we didn’t need suits or anything. There were guns there for us. All of us prepared for what was to come. With gun in hand we took off in random directions.
We were told to do our own thing so sticking together as a combat group wasn’t required. As I broke away from the starting point I was thinking about this virtual reality. It felt unbelievably real. I had what seemed to be my exact body from the real world. I couldn’t point out anything that felt different than the previous world, maybe there were no differences.
I spotted the first sign of movement. From out of a few spaced out trees came a zealot. I started shooting at him depleting his shields. I was a great aim and had a ton of training so combat was easy for me. His shields were gone in no time and I started putting holes in his body. He wasn’t even halfway to me when he crumpled to the ground lifeless. I continued on, killing anything I ran into.
At one point I ran into a group of three zealots and two dragoons. They had already seen me in the distance so there wasn’t going to be any hiding or running. I immediately started firing on the zealots. Two of them fell about half-way to me. I turned my fire to a dragoon. As I was shooting at it I was backing up at the same trying to stay in a good position. I made quick work of one of the dragoons. The second dragoon was in range to fire at me and wasted no time letting off its first shots. The last zealot was also closing in. While dodging the blasts from the dragoon, I started firing upon him. I finished him just before the zealot got to me.
The zealot was on me. I kicked him back with my foot using some of the power to push myself backwards. I fired upon him depleting his shield as he closed the gap again. He sliced at me and shredded my gun into pieces. I pulled out my hand gun and started shooting while dodging his attacks. After a long, heated battle he finally crashed to the ground.
With my main weapon destroyed and a lot accomplished, I pulled out a device in my pocket and pressed the button on it. I awoke in reality. I was amazed at how real that world felt. It was such an amazing experience. One of the observers came up and asked me some questions about my experience. After answering all of his questions he allowed me to leave for the day.
At meal time I sat down with one of the guys I had recognized from the program. “How did you like that, I enjoyed it immensely.”
“It was an epic experience. I’m overly excited that I signed up for these tests. I can’t wait for tomorrow for our next tests.”
“I hear you man.” Having finished my meal I told him farewell and headed to my room for the night.
In my room I did nothing but think about that experience I had. I thought a lot about it. I also wondered what tomorrow and future tests would hold. It got late really fast. Finally I went to bed and got some shut-eye.
The next morning the alarm clock was barking at me. I hated alarm clocks but let them live their miserable lives due to their necessity. I made my way back to room 131. About the same thing happened before we were plugged in and turned on, but the general added a comment. “We have added a new feature to the program. Your body will now be the body you are thinking about instead of your own if you wish to have a different body.” I don’t know why but for some reason I though of a girl I knew from high school. Her name was Alexandra.
In the other world I had actually taken on the body of the girl I knew from school, Alexandra. I was shocked yet amazed. I didn’t have time to think too much about it since we had to arm ourselves and start fighting.
Again we all went our separate ways. I couldn’t stop thinking about how insanely amazing this was. I killed everything I came across yet again. I never ran into large groups of enemies. Yesterday I had only fought Protoss but today was marked with some Zerg in the mix. After what seemed approximately five hours I finally pushed the switch to go back.
Awakening in the real world I looked at my leg and saw what appeared to be a blister. I didn’t think much about it and answered the observer’s questions. After I finished answering questions and woke up some more from the other world, I took another look at my leg. This time I was more surprised. It looked like I had spikes coming out my leg. I looked at it really close and my heart skipped a beat. I could see ant-sized things on my leg. One I recognized as a Hydralisk, and another as a sunken colony. The spikes seemed oddly familiar and reminded me of a hive. I noticed a blister on my leg and thought what if it’s a Hatchery spawning in, or a Hatchery evolving into a Lair. My leg had like a gas coming from it.
I was appalled by what I was seeing and couldn’t make sense of it. My biggest question was how did this happen. Did I get hit by a Hydralisk and somehow became infected and it carried over to the real-world? Was it just an effect of the virtual reality itself, or was it because I went in as someone else, or even as a different gender? I didn’t know how to handle this or what to do next….
