Save the James Webb Space Telescope!

Just talk about stuff in general...Doesn't matter what it is.

Save the James Webb Space Telescope!

Post by K73SK » Wed Jul 13, 2011 3:27 pm

Here's simply a copy/paste of a post I have made on a couple of forums I go to already.

A post that I made on another forums that I suggest everyone look at:

First, here's the story (source: http://www.space.com/12263-nasa-chief-c ... scope.html ):
NASA chief Charlie Bolden went to bat for the agency's imperiled next-generation space telescope Tuesday (July 12), telling members of Congress that the instrument has greater potential for discovery than the iconic Hubble Space Telescope.

A proposed congressional budget bill announced last week would terminate NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), an ambitious instrument with a history of delays and cost overruns. But NASA can deliver JWST to space for about the same price as Hubble, Bolden said — and the science returns would be even greater.

"I have tried to explain what I think is the importance of James Webb, in terms of opening new horizons far greater than we got from Hubble," Bolden told members of the House Science, Space and Technology committee Tuesday. "I would only say that for about the same cost as Hubble in real-year dollars, we'll bring James Webb into operation."

A rocky history

The $6.5 billion JWST, named after a former NASA administrator, is billed as the agency's muscular successor to Hubble, which launched back in 1990 and is still going strong. JWST is an infrared observatory designed to peer further back into the universe's early days than ever before.

While many researchers have enthusiastically touted the telescope's potential, its development has been plagued by problems. Last November, an independent review panel found that JWST will cost at least $6.5 billion and could launch no earlier than September 2015, putting it $1.5 billion over budget and more than a year behind schedule.

The telescope's issues are primarily the result of poor management practices, the panel further concluded.

A recent budget and technology plan painted an even more pessimistic picture, estimating that JWST could launch by 2018 at the earliest.

And last week, the telescope's future came into even more serious question. The House Appropriations subcommittee that oversees NASA proposed a 2012 spending bill that would give the space agency just $16.8 billion, $1.6 billion less than last year. JWST's funding would be pulled completely.

Fighting for JWST

Bolden came to Capitol Hill Tuesday to discuss NASA's plans for its next heavy-lift rocket system — specifically, to explain to an increasingly impatient Congress why the agency has yet to decide upon a design. But he also fielded questions about JWST's fate and made a case for the instrument's continued funding.

For example, Bolden stressed that NASA has made changes to JWST's management, and that the instrument is already quite far along in development. More than 75 percent of the telescope's hardware has already been delivered, Bolden said.

The NASA chief also stressed JWST's potential to revolutionize our understanding of the universe, invoking Hubble's great achievements as an example of what such powerful telescopes can do.

"When we started Hubble, dark energy didn't exist. At least, we didn't know about it," Bolden said. "When we launched Hubble, there was no such thing as extrasolar planets. So those kinds of discoveries would probably go lacking, unless some other nation stepped forward and did it."
As a HUGE supporter for the JWST over the past few years, I am absolutely against the canceling of the fundings. I am well aware of the problems that it's faced, but seriously...This telescope can be a breakthrough for so much learning for the human race. If you are against it as much as I, check out the following:

As much as I'd like to see this new telescope in operation, and as early as possible, I don't think it's going to happen. What with the economy's state, and NASA budget cuts by the administration, 2018 even seems like high hopes. I'm all for scientific and technological progress, so I hope this telescope's launch isn't canceled. But with the way Nikola Tesla's achievements have been suppressed I'd say the money tycoons don't like things that won't give them immediate profit DX< I'll sign the petition.

I agree with sise, as an astronmer and a subscriber to astronmy monthly, id love to some progress, but the economy would most like fail in realizing the beauty of it all.....
NASA usually doesnt do or cancels any project that's either too much work to finish in 4 years
Or 2 over theit usual budget.... So unless they ACTUALLY start it, chances are theyll throw it away all together
it really do be like that tho

From all the knowledge I got from economic classes, my opinion is that the economy is not getting any worse - it's getting better. It just continues to appear it's in horrible shape because people are believing it is. In reality, it's actually getting better than it was previously. Likely the funding is being cut from fear that the economy will go straight downward again... Yet these people in Congress gave themselves raises before. So they'll pay themselves more but not fund a project that can likely help us a LOT in the future? It's not just discoveries - but an expansion to mankind. Earth is a beautiful planet and definitely one we cannot let be destroyed... But with the population of humans increasing exponentially, we have to start putting studies into science that can help us study more of space and at the same time find ways to leave Earth to colonize another planet for our ridiculous number of humans.

Or we could just make the U.N. cut all people to not have more than 1 child whatsoever...Like the Chinese did. xD

it really do be like that tho

Well, it turns out they're still working on it pretty good. It's 98% done the last time I saw news on it.
