Ok so im doing a run of Legaia where I dont use any guides to find out what the arts are im going to figure them all out myself (except for using the hints in the instruction booklet) and want to know the easiest way to learn arts on my own, what ive been doing so far is writing down combinations and seeing if they work, any additional help would be appreciated!

Iunno how to help you- I don't usually do reruns of the game. I've only rebooted Legaia once, and it was only because I couldn't buy a second disc and the emulator was the next best choice (but then I bought another disc and abandoned the emulator... and lost the USB with it... again... for the third time).
Aw man, that sounds as hard as remembering SA's. Super Arts are the worst. .___.
It's one thing to do it as you are, where you purposely do it without cheating, but how can anyone do a Super Art off the top of their heads (I can only remember like 2)? The game doesn't keep any record of it for you to use. WHY. THE. the the the the. NOT. *Continues to rant on his own*

Well, I've played the game so many times that I have all the Arts memorized (even the Super Arts). If you're trying to get all the arts without a guide, just randomly press directions, or use the "Auto" battle command.

I found most of mine without the guides by using the Auto feature as well

Best strategy is to talk to the various NPC's who will teach you arts for each character - I believe there is one such NPC in each town, with the exception of maybe Octam.
There are 11 normal arts, 3 hyper arts (found in chests or won in boss battles) and 1 Miracle art for each character. I know you can learn 8 of the normal arts just by talking with NPC's, but I'm not certain about the other two normals.
As for the Miracle Arts, good luck. I've memorized them from having played the game a couple dozen times, but that probably doesn't help you. Sadly, I don't think there's a good way to find those without a guide, since the odds of stumbling upon one are 1/(4^9) = 1/262144.

Ive learnt a good bit so far on my own and from the instruction booklet which gives a hint to 3 arts for all 3 characters, I might cheat a little for the super and miracle arts though.

You could use math and try every possible combination but that would take forever
1=down 2=up 3=right 4=left
111 112 113 114 121 122 etc for 3 hit combos
1111 1112 1113 1114 1121 etc for 4 hit combos
Good luck figuring out Noa's 6 move art without cheating
Oh and I guess the hardest of all the 9 move miracles if you plan to learn those without cheating O:. I imagine there's an easy thousand+ combinations for those.
111111111 111111112 hahaha I came up with a formula to figure out possible combinations, if my formula is right and my math then there are 262,144 possible combinations...x3 for all characters and you're looking at an eternity right there.
