Forget everything you thought you knew about Fishing

For tl:dr just read the bolded parts I guess. But I would highly recommend you read the whole thing if you've ever been annoyed by always catching Chargers and Fly Pies.
Over the last two days I have discovered the TRUE way to fish in this game. It all started when I watched a Gala-Only run on Youtube and saw the player using a War God Icon as early as Jeremi. I've played this game countless times since its release and never knew that you could get a War God Icon at the Vidna Fishing Spot with 50K points.
So that's what I set out to do. I started a new game and played till I got to Vidna. I grabbed the Old Rod and some extra lures from the Coin Guy and set off to fish. I decided to try reeling with a pattern (something I always tried to do before but failed apparently). I quickly found a method for reeling that gave the "GOOD!" message frequently. It's really quite simple. I hit Square, roll my thumb down over the X button, release and pause for a split second, and then repeat. After mastering it you can get a constant "GOOD!" message to keep appearing as you reel.
Let me tell you right now. THIS is the way to fish in LoL. I got to 50,000 points in no time. It took me about 7 hours over the course of two days to rack up ~50,000 points. Obviously I did all my fishing at Vidna using the Old Rod. I caught Spikefish about 90% of the time when using the "GOOD!" reeling and a Normal Lure. To make sure this wasn't some fluke I tried fishing with all the Lures. I also tried fishing on a different save file at Buma and Vidna and seen similar results.
Here is what I have noticed. If you hook a fish during a "GOOD!" message (there's a small window of time associated with it) then you have a drastically greater chance for that fish to be a "rare" fish. Now I know this seems self explanatory right? But for anyone who's played LoL's fishing mini game you know how notorious it is for giving you nothing but crap fish 99% of the time.
So using the "GOOD!" reeling method here are my results (Yes I started to keep track. Who wouldn't after catching a dozen Spikefish in a row!?)
Fishing at Vidna (Old Rod)
Using a Light Lure and fishing normally I caught mostly Jacks and the occassional Fly Pie. Using the "GOOD!" method I caught almost exclusively Jacks (albeit they were Large Jacks).
Using a Normal Lure and fishing normally I caught mostly High Chargers (60%) and Fly Pies (40%). RARELY I would hook a Spikefish. However, using the "GOOD!" method I caught Spikefish 90% of the time and High Chargers the other 10%. This is 100% repeatable. I did it on multiple files, and at different sittings. (also during my 50K run I lost 4 Normal Lures when I hooked an impossibly hard to catch fish, presumably the Baraba.)
Using Heavy Lures and fishing normally I would catch almost nothing but Fly Pies. Switching over to the "GOOD!" method allowed me to catch Chargers 90% of the time and Octobans the other 10%. Again, this is definately repeatable.
Fishing at Buma (Legendary Rod)
Just a quick side note: Fishing with the Legendary Rod is a double edge sword. While it handles better than the Old Rod, it also has a higher Hit rate (a higher chance to hook a fish). This makes it very hard to reel with the "GOOD!" method because a lot of the time a fish will bite your lure as soon as you start reeling (therefore not even giving you a chance to reel "GOOD!")
I didn't do nearly as much fishing here as I did at Vidna (since I was trying to earn that 50,000 points in my new game file). But I will mention that using the "GOOD!" reeling method with a Heavy Lure I caught 4 Lippians in a row.
Like I said, it seems like common sense that getting the "GOOD!" message would increase your chances at better fish. But, in all my years of playing LoL I never could get a constant "GOOD!" message until now. It seems everytime you get the message to pop up there is a very short window of time that if you hook a fish it will be a better one than normal. The key is getting the "GOOD!" message to pop up multiple times in a row in order to maximize that window of time. The region you fish at doesn't seem to matter much. I caught Spikefish consistently whether I was fishing in the center, off to the right, or off to the left as long as I was fishing "GOOD!" However, the depth of your Lure does seem to matter. Almost all the Spikefish I caught were in the 4-5 meter depth range.
I can make a video to prove these results if anyone is interested. I figured I'd post this here since the LoL board at GFAQs seems all but dead. Oh and please, no one accuse me of using a Gameshark because I'm not and I don't even own one. I wouldn't take the time to write out this finding in such detail if I wasn't so thoroughly impressed by it myself.
