Why can Vahn make epic Michael Jordan jumps on Mt. Rikuroa, but he can't jump over the tiny river next to Drake Castle?

Given that Gala has shown quite convincingly that he can fly (at Sol Tower), what was the purpose of enlisting the help of the Soren?
