I know myself and Nightshade have been working on segmented speedrunning this game.

Another runner, Deathtome, has been RTAing the game, and today beat the game in a single sitting in 12 hours and 22 minutes (11:40:56 game time) http://www.twitch.tv/deathtome/b/576681868.

I think this can be improved a bit too!

The problem with single-segment is that it's not a very reliable trick to luck-manipulate the slots, and I use the Point Card to cheese through Xain, and it also helps against Cort 2.

In all honesty, the hardest part of the game for speedrunning is Cort 2 because he is non-elemental and most of the rest of the game is using Jewel abuse to cut the bosses' damage output in half.

Is he aware of the Juggernaut Room glitch?

Also, it's worth mentioning exactly what the trick is for the slots.

You want to focus your eyes on the very side of each reel and look for the outward protrusions of the gold/blue "spikes" on the sides of the punch/kick symbols. If you can match the rhythm of the wheel (it's a constant cycle), you can time it and hit bonus reels consistently. I don't think it's quite frame-perfect, but you don't have more than 2-3 frames of leeway on either side.

A good goal would be to get around 20,000 coins within 30 minutes.

Hrm, I always looked at the center of the reel as I could pick up the peach color for the fist and feet. Worked 90% of the time but I had a problem with the third reel I think because they're too spread out. I'll remember that; I'm curious if that would work better.

The third reel speeds up and blurs, assuming you have two in a row already. That's the real challenge, and that probably is frame-perfect to get that last one. Your rhythm has to be very precise to get the last column and trigger the bonus game.

(But constant bonus games would be a huge advantage to doing this TAS style. All of the luck and skill in getting this doesn't matter on TAS)

I close my eyes and time the reels in my head. It's been pretty effective so far.

I think in a segmented run, you don't need to do any leveling, except to get Vahn to 3-4 for the Caruban fight. With that said, the Viguro fight is probably the most difficult in the game on a speedrun, unless you attempt to cheese it with Nighto. I think for any sane attempt, you should probably reset until you can take one out on the first round, and leave that be.

The most important items in the game are the Speed Chain and the Chicken King, of course. I'm pretty sure that every Miracle Water in the game is worth getting, including the one where you have to watch the Pepe cutscene (which costs about 1 minute).

What I want to talk about is getting a route for the Stat+ Waters; who should get them?

Okay, so I'm preparing to take another crack at this during the winter break, so I want to take the time to go through and map out an item checklist (namely, what items to get throughout the run)

Rim Elm:
Healing Leaf in Vahn's House
Magic Leaf at Village Elder's
3x Healing Leaves at Shopkeeper's (during Mist)
Mei's Pendant & Hunter's Clothes
Point Card

Healing items sell for a fair amount at this point in the game, especially given we want to get at least one more Deep Sea Jewel and get our Defender Chains.

Point Card is critical for the Xain, Che Delilas, and Cort 2 fights. Mei's Pendant takes about 1 minute to get, but it's very helpful for the bosses in Drake Kingdom (especially Songi 1)

Honey may be worth getting at a later point - it takes about 3 minutes, but it can save that much time or more in the Karisto bosses. I think the best time to get this is right after Van Saryu - you need to heal after Saryu and before Dohati to recover MP, but resting in Ratayu triggers a Noa dream (which costs a fair amount of time).

Hunter's Spring - Skip. Costs too much time.

Drake Castle:
Door of Light: Use to escape Rikuroa post-Caruban
Fire Book 1: Very helpful on Rikuroa and vs. Caruban.
We'll get all the other items on the return trip to save time - keep the Healing Bloom - very useful for Viguro and Zeto fights.

Snowdrift Cave:
Healing Shroom (4): Get them maybe? They only cost about 2-3 seconds, but I'm not sure where they are useful, except to sell Healing Leaves instead.

Drake Kingdom 1:
Nail Glove - Skip it. Costs 2+ minutes with the cutscene and probably one random battle.

Mt. Rikuroa:
Skip the Healing Leaf and Vahn Fist you'd get by going right at the T-intersection. That costs 2-3 minutes.

Drake 2:
Get all the items. Fail the quiz (0/3) to get Wisdom Water.

Drake Kingdom 2:
Wind Book 1, Phoenix, Life Water:
Is the Phoenix worth getting? I believe this has a 1 minute cutscene associated.

Biron 1:
Power Elixir, Medicine, Phoenix, Healing Bloom
Probably worth getting all these (if only to sell)
*Get a Door of Light here to escape West Voz.

Drake K. 3
Ivory Book: Critical time saver. Will be useful for trying to absorb Viguro as well.

----
Will continue on from West Voz later.

Probably not needed to get a Door of Light in Biron; there's one in West Voz that I forgot about...

West Voz:
Skip the two Medicine. You probably want to get the Healing Bloom for Zeto, and in doing so, the Noa Feral doesn't really cost any time.

Magic Amulet sells for 1,000 G. Probably worth it at this point.

Don't forget the Deep Sea Jewel near the Genesis Tree.

Make sure to have Vahn and Noa both absorb Vera and Nighto here. Vahn really should get Vera at Mt. Rikuroa, but if not, this is the time.

Biron 2: Guardian Water: Costs about 2 seconds. Clearly worth it. Don't forget it; it is permanently missable.

East Voz:

Guardian Water: Is this worth it? Assuming one extra random battle and a first-round escape, it probably costs a minute. Does this save at least that much?

Cure Amulet: Probably not worth the 15 seconds.

Antidote: Also not worth it because it sells for so little.
Medicine is on the path and costs about 2 seconds, which is fine. The Survival Club probably saves time because we will need to fight a couple random battles for Gala to absorb Theeder and Vera. Earth Jewel post-Viguro fight will be used for Che Delilas.

Viguro Fight: Viguro drop a very useful Golden Compass at 5% likelihood. Nighto kill at level 1 is a 6.25% chance on each one (1/16). I'm not willing to manipulate for a roughly 1/2600 chance of a double kill and a steal. I'd like to see 1 kill on the first round, as well as the Compass drop. This is a 1/80 chance or so, which is more realistic.

(If I skip Hunter's Spring, can I still buy from Lezam? It may be worth taking a detour to buy a Golden Compass early - it would probably save 3-4 minutes just in the Voz Forests because of the random battles I could auto-escape first round and skip battle animations.)

Biron 3:
10x Healing Leaves: Useful out-of-battle healing during Zeto's Dungeon. Doesn't really cost much time, since there's new weapons & I'd like another Deep Sea Jewel.

Zeto's Dungeon & Beginning Sebucus will be sometime tomorrow after I'm less tired.

Well, this is apparently a thing. The true run that I plan to get some recording equipment for and put on YouTube will hopefully be about 20 minutes faster still, but still, eat your hearts out.
